We are Celebrating Spring with New Propane Powered Lawn Equipment

It's no secret, residents of central Indiana have survived a long, hard winter, but finally, spring weather is upon us. No sooner do Hoosiers put away the snow shovel than they have to tune the lawn mower. While homeowners are preparing to tackle their spring lawn duties, we at Landscape Solutions are preparing, too. However, as a premiere lawn service provider for commercial properties and homeownwer's association, our preparation is on a somewhat larger scale.

While we stayed very busy combatting the relentless snow and ice of this last winter for our customers, we are excited to lose the plows and switch gears to our lawn and landscape services. We offer our services not only with the highest quality, but with a keen awareness of the importance of protecting our natural environment. While "being green" may be a catch phrase with other companies, at Landscape Solutions our commitment to eco-friendly practices is demonstrated in our lawn and landscape maintenance practices and in the methods we use to provide our services.

To that end, we have expanded our fleet of propane powered equipment. Take a look at our newest team members! (pictured)

Central Indiana Braces for a Different Kind of Severe Weather

Central Indiana just survived a record-breaking winter. We were suddenly introduced to the phrase "Polar Vortex" as temperatures plummeted and stayed well below freezing for days and weeks on end. We saw an above average number of snow events, school cancellations, and and weather-related expenses. Read our blog, "It's a New Snow Record," to relive the long winter -- if you want to! But spring is here and winter is over now. Residents of Hamilton County and central Indiana can relax and stop worry about severe weather, right?

WRONG. Let's not forget -- spring brings with it other threatening weather, and Hoosiers need to be prepared.

Snow Mold and How to Deal with It

As the days are getting longer and afternoon high temps are flirting with the 70's, residents of Central Indiana realize that spring is on the horizon. Finally, we are coming to the end of a long, brutal winter that blanketed Hamilton County with record snowfall and introduced us all to the phrase, "Polar Vortex." Well we have another phrase that might be new to you -- SNOW MOLD.

MOLD -- it's a four-letter word that can strike fear into the hearts of homeowners and property managers. We know the danger of moisture within our buildings and homes, but there is another kind of mold that you may have never considered -- snow mold.

But We All Win

We at Landscape Solutions are celebrating! We have received a tremendous honor and we want to share this recognition with everyone. We also want to thank Kelly Walsh of the Greater Indiana Clean Cities Coalition and McGavic Outdoor Partner -- we recognize those who that have helped make this award possible.

The Greater Indiana Clean Cities Board of Directors selected Landscape Solutions as the recipient of the 2014 Stakeholder Award for Propane Deployment. Other Stakeholder Awards winners included former Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, Mayor Greg Ballard and State Representative Randy Frye. For years, Landscape Solutions has been using propane instead of gasoline to reduce our production of greenhouse gas and to lessen Indiana's foreign oil dependence. We were honored to be invited to the Greater Indiana Clean Cities 11th Annual Legislative Luncheon and Expo to help educate our elected officials about the alternative fuels and technologies available today. As a shining example of the successful utilization of alternative fuels in our industry, we feel we have an obligation to spread the message.

Central Indiana, It's a New Snowfall Record!

If you've lived in central Indiana for a while, then chances are you've reminisced with someone about the blizzard of '78, when the midwest was paralyzed by the worst blizzard in history. Or you remember the winter of 1981-82, the winter central Indiana saw 51" of snow in one season -- the snowiest winter in Hoosier history...until now.

Silver Lining to the Polar Vortex

Does the cold snap mean death for the Emerald Ash Borer?

Central Indiana is in the throws of the fourth snowiest winter on record and Hoosiers are learning new phrases like, "Polar Vortex," as low temperatures regularly dip below zero and high temperatures hover below freezing.

While Hoosiers suffer in misery with spring fever, there may just be a silver lining. These extreme temperatures have entomologists hoping the emerald ash borer population suffers in the conditions.

Reflections on 2013 & Looking Forward to 2014

Over the last year, we have remained committed to our mission of providing our services efficiently, effectively, and in ways that minimize our negative impact on the environment. Our clients -- from HOA officers to property managers -- benefit from a personalized, custom approach that guarantees them the best quality service for their budget. Additionally, our customers appreciate our constant effort to be "Greener in the Green Industry."

Greener in the Green Industry

In central Indiana, Landscape Solutions pioneered the idea that our services -- from lawn & landscaping services to snow & ice removal -- could be provided effectively AND in an environmentally conscious way. In 2007, Landscape Solutions began using alternatively fueled mowing equipment, cutting greenhouse gas emissions for each piece of equipment in half.

Since then, we have met our goal of powering 100% of our fleet -- including our trucks -- by alternative, cleaner burning fuels. When you see a Landscape Solutions truck in central Indiana, you can be assured that the alternative fuel powering it is producing 60 to 70 percent less hydrocarbons than traditionally fueled vehicles! Landscape Solutions' Account Representatives and staff are now driving environmentally conscious Chevrolet Volt, a hybrid vehicle powered by electricity and gasoline that can easily average 900 miles between fill-ups!

Record Snow and Cold Hits Central Indiana

As we look back on a week of crazy weather, even for Indiana, I would would like to thank our customers for their patience and for understanding the magnitude of the storm and extreme conditions we experienced this week.

This storm was described as a, "once in a century" weather event. The heavy snowfall of 12" to 14" followed by the dangerously low temperatures and high winds associated with the Polar Vortex lined up perfectly to produce the weather we experienced.

How You Can Make a Difference in 2014

At Landscape Solutions, we are committed to making a difference by lessening the negative impact we have on the environment. We back our commitment by using propane powered equipment, alternatively fueled fleet vehicles, and environmentally friendlier snow and ice removal chemicals. This year, our account representavies and staff members will be driving Chevy Volts -- electric/gas hybrid vehicles that can average 900 miles between fill-ups. We have invested significantly in this worthy cause and continue to seek ways to do more. Visit our Green Technology page to read more about our commitment and the measures we have taken.

Whether you are ready to make changes on the level of replacing your current vehicle with an energy efficient hybrid or not, there are steps you can take to make a difference in your own impact on the environment. Every change we make, however small it may seem, contributes and adds up to make a difference. And the more people make such commitments, the bigger the change for good!

While you are making your 2014 New Year's Resolutions, consider adding some of these!
